When it comes to installing WordPress on a new domain name and hosting account, while you could do it with the quick software installation wizards, I like to install WordPress by hand so I am in control of everything. Here’s the checklist I follow every time I want to install WordPress to ensure it’s successfully just the way I want it every time.
1.0 ____ WITHIN CPANEL
1.1 ____ If you have Cpanel on your hosting account, which you should always try to get when you order a new website hosting account, log into it, and click on MySQL® Databases. Here you’ll create a new database, username and password and then assign that user name and password to that newly created database and assign all the functions allowed to that newly created database. This should take no more than 5 minutes to complete. Make note of the database name, username and password in your computer. You’ll need it later as you are about to read in this checklist.
1.2 ____ Download the latest version of WordPress to your computer by going to: WordPress.org/download
1.3 ____ Inside the Cpanel, click on the File Manger icon and a new tab will open showing you the contents of the server where you’ll host your WordPress website. Click on “public_html”. In the right-hand window, upload the WordPress zip file you just downloaded and uncompress it in the root directory.
1.4 ____ Install WordPress on the new hosting account by going to your domain name in a new tab window. Follow the steps to install WordPress. This should take 1-2 minutes. Have a database title, username and password ready to complete the installation.
1.5 ____ When WordPress installation is complete, you will be redirected to a login screen to log into the dashboard of your newly installed WordPress website. Congratulations! This part is done. WordPress is ready for you to set up the WordPress dashboard.
2.0 ____ WORDPRESS WEBSITE SETUP
Once logged into the dashboard, there are a few things you’ll want to do right away. They are:
2.1 ____ Install my recommended list of admin-related plugins. The list is all inclusive and thorough. Install all of these plugins before you start adding pages and posts and uploading images to your website.
2.2 ____ Select a theme for your site. Check out my checklist for choosing the right theme for your WordPress site prior to making your decision.
2.3 ____ Confirm and customize the WordPress admin dashboard before getting started. Look for Permalinks and General, which are both found under SETTINGS.
2.4 ____ Turn on a COMING SOON message so you can work on your website without visitors seeing what you’re doing, before you’re ready to showcase it to the world.
THAT’S IT! YOU’RE PRETTY MUCH DONE INSTALLING AND SETTING UP WORDPRESS THE WAY I DO IT!
